Strike Update: York University does not condone any form of violence

York University does not condone any form of violence. Our Campus Safety personnel are well trained in handling all types of situations on a non-physical basis. Their first and foremost responsibility is to ensure the safety of all members of the York community.

At York’s Senate meeting last Thursday security officials were on hand to manage crowds due to Fire Code regulations and to ensure safe entry of all Senators to the Senate Chamber. The entrance area is small and was extremely over crowded in clear violation of the Code, with much pushing and shoving as non-Senators tried to force their way into the Chamber. We are aware of CUPE 3903's allegation that a Senator was physically restrained as he tried to enter. We take this allegation very seriously and will investigate fully.

It is important to note that seven of York's security officials sustained injuries as a result of the crowds pushing them, as they were facilitating safe entry of all Senators and preventing non-Senators from pushing. These officials are members of  CUPE 1356-1 and respect their relationship with CUPE 3903.

We are deeply troubled by this event and the University has begun a full investigation of the incident, which will include reviewing video footage and interviews. Anyone with information is requested to contact 416-736-5361.
