York University is committed to creating an environment where people feel valued and safe on its campuses. We recognize that it is only in such an environment that each individual can perform at their optimal level and make a full contribution to York and the broader community.
In June 2010, the University President, Mamdouh Shoukri, received the final report of a campus safety audit which had been carried out by the Metropolitan Action Committee on Violence Against Women and Children (METRAC). The audit, which was two years in development, included over 100 recommendations which were divided into three categories: the Social Environment, Security Services, and the Physical Environment. The University moved quickly to begin implementation of the recommendations, establishing the Community Safety Council (CSC), Safety Audit Implementation Committee (a standing committee of the CSC), and the Management Safety Committee – all of which play an important role in the implementation of the report’s recommendations.
Detailed information about the progress we have made and continue to make on the recommendations of the METRAC Safety Audit can be found under Community Updates and Detailed Action Plan.
